Great SALE items from Wisdom Lane Antiques!
Currently in the Wisdom Lane Antiques shop on Etsy, I have some great items on SALE with prices that have been reduced!
There is a wide variety of items in the SALE section in my shop from vintage dresses to a trolley sign. One of the items in the section right now is this great vintage purse from the 1960’s.
This purse has a great silver tone pierced metal top with snap closure and aurora borealis stones on it. It would look great in any formal event or even out on the town! You can see it in my Etsy shop here. Another great item that’s on sale is this trolley sign.
This great trolley sign is an advertisement for EDISON MAZDA LAMP, and it dates from the early 1900’s to the early 1920’s. You can see it in my Etsy shop here.
This terrific Pretty In Pink lace prom dress by Dawn Joy Fashion is also currently on sale.
The dress dates to the 1980’s, and it also has the original tags on it. Not only would this dress be great for the prom, it also would be great for a wedding or a formal dinner.

Here’s some great news about the Wisdom Lane Antiques shop on Etsy!
Over the last couple of days, some of the categories that have the items for sale in my Etsy shop have changed. Now you will have an easier time finding all of the great items up for sale.
Advertising, home decor and even a category just for Fenton have been created, and old classics like glassware and pottery are still around.
There are two new categories that you will find interesting, and the first is full of items that are on sale. One such item is this great hand painted burmese piece from Fenton.
This great piece with a sea scene can be found in the sale category here. As a matter of fact, you can find the rest of the items in the sale category here.
The other new category that’s interesting is called TOTALLY DIFFERENT ITEMS. This category is full of fun items that you would never expect to find in my shop. A bride’s basket, a hat form and even a hand made art pottery tea pot with a raku style glaze can be found items in this great category here.

Sometimes directions help out with collecting paper money
Directions play a part in quite a few different ways in collecting, and this definitely includes collecting paper money from the early 1800’s. During this time, it was up to the banks to produce paper money–they would file for a charter with the United States government, and this would allow the bank to produce their own paper money.
Collectors often look for paper money in a couple of ways for their collections. They will look for a certain bank, city, or even state that the money was produced in.
If there was a major metropolitan area like Boston or Philadelphia, the more banks were likely to be there. The east coast of the United States has quite a few different banks that offered paper money. This was true going west to just past the Mississippi river. The farther west you went, the fewer banks you would run into.
The gold rush in California that started in 1848 was what helped bring some banks (and eventually a United States mint in San Francisco) that far west.
When you travel up north (in places like North Dakota, Washington State, and even Alaska) they have very few banks at all. There have been a few bills (collectors also call them “notes”) turn up for a few banks in these states, and are highly sought after.
You need to be careful when you are looking for paper money from the early 1800’s to add to your collection—there are quite a few outright counterfeit bills out there. Not only that, there were also a lot of bills in circulation in the 1800’s that were counterfeit. One reason was that there were many different designs that were made by the different banks out there making it harder for you to know if it was real or not when the bills were new.
Another reason is because there were a ton of banks that failed for one reason or another in the 1800’s (the money from these banks are also called “broken bank notes”). There were lists for shut down banks and fake bills that circulated to merchants or vendors, but the lists were often out dated after a while. It also took a while to get these lists circulated since mail had to go by stage coach, train or horse.

More pottery vocabulary words for the beginning collector
When you dive into the world of antiques and collectibles, you will find out how things are made. Here’s some of the words that I’ve picked up over the years about how pottery is made:
Greenhouse—this is the place where pots are kept to harden before they go into the kiln.
Feathering—this is an effect that’s obtained by moving a feather through wet slip decoration.
Salt glaze—this is an effect by throwing salt into the kiln when pottery is being fired. The salt vaporizes during the firing and a fine orange peel surface is left on the pottery.

Better keep an eye out!
Whenever I am going through a flea market or even a local thrift store, I often remind myself that I need to keep my eyes peeled—you never know what you will run across. It could be anything really, it could be any type of item that you didn’t expect.
This happened to me not too long ago when I went to a local Goodwill store. I was walking through and saw, well…
When I first saw it, I knew that it was a scaled down house. It looks like someone took a lot of time to make it, but the real question was rather simple—what was it really?
After looking at it for a little bit, I had part of the roof come off of the house in my hand, kind of like what’s pictured below. I quickly realized that this was a jewelry box.
Talk about a fun way to store your jewelry! So, it always pays to keep an eye peeled so you don’t miss that one-of-a-kind item.
What kinds of interesting finds have you run across when out at a flea market or antique store?
More vocabulary words for the glass collector to keep in mind
When you start to collect items in a certain area like glassware, you find out that you need to know some of the terminology when you go along. Here’s some of the words that I’ve heard over the years about glassware:
Bent (or Slumped) Glass—this is glass that has been heated up in a kiln from room temperature to a temperature high enough to cause it to soften and sag into or even over a mold. The finished product will take the shape of the mold that the glass is around.
Iridescent—this is a surface treatment when a layer of metallic oxide is bonded to the hot glass surface just after the form the glass into a sheet. The result is a colorful one, and it also has a shimmering effect.
Seedy Glass—this is glass that has air bubbles trapped in it. This is when air or gas is injected into the molten glass prior to forming the sheet causing the bubbles.
